A dehumidifier is a device that extracts moisture from the air, thereby drying out a space. They are particularly useful in spaces such as below ground rooms and basements which often have high humidity, particularly during the summer months if air flow is poor. Home de-humidifiers generally work by mechanical means (drawing moist air over a refrigerated coil with a small fan). As the moist air cools, the water condenses and drops into a bucket, and the dryer air is re-warmed by the other side of the refrigeration coil but now with far less moisture in the air. Because the collection bucket can fill up quickly and needs emptying, some larger product models are designed to use the continuous drainage system and are plumbed directly into a drain. These models can be left on for prolonged periods with no ill effects.
